Nashville Star now a Reality Show

Like the story before this, I didn’t want to write this story because I am actually lending credibility to the fantasy that NBC’s Nashville Star is a nationwide talent contest instead of a shameful reality show. Previous seasons, while sometimes pained, at least attempted to pretend they were a talent competition.

There is simply no conceivable way anybody with just a little music savvy can believe that this season’s contestants are in any way representative of the unsigned country music talent “out there.” NBC has successfully managed to morph this former talent show into a low-rent reality show. Before you send me any nasty emails, please understand I believe that the final contestants are all perfectly fine singers. However, they simply and undeniably are NOT the best of the best of the unsigned country music artists out there. I hope this will be one of the last stories I have to write about a stupid reality show.

Most of Nashville is not happy with the choices they went with on the show. Very poorly done and Jewel’s rude remarks early on to upcoming artist lost her quite a few fans. Billy Ray at least acted decently to people. There may be some rude people in the industry but for the most part people are courteous to each other. In fact they even blacklist those who are too difficult or obnoxius to work around, whether it is the artist or their management. Too much talent out there to waste time with obnoxious people.

If you don’t like them don’t vote them back on. Nobody with a brain wants to put themself in firing line for insults like the show was doing. That is one reason they weren’t able to interest a lot of the really great talent who is here in Nashville, to even want on the show.

It was a real disappointment and embarrassment to see the show as poorly done as it was. If they are going to put Nashville’s name and “music” in it then they really need to up the bar on it. People expect great talent from this city. It is here, it just wasn’t there on the show.

Another mistake is having these new artist do major songs that hit gold. Very few will ever do as well as the artist who made it famous and it makes them look bad to try.

Put some original music in the mix at least, afterall half of Nashville are songwriters. In fact many singers here wrote the songs they sing and play.

There is also a great diversity of talent in this town from rockers, jazz, blues, country to classical music. The ones other then country should also have a chance to show what talent is.
